The 2-8-4 Berkshire was first introduced in 1927 and was designed and built by both Alco and Lima. The innovative 4-wheel trailing truck design allowed for a larger boiler which was capable of producing much more steam. Only 750 Berks were made, but remained popular for much longer than most other steamers built in the same era. Lima built the last Berkshire in 1949.
