Troubleshooting Electric Train Sets

By: Staff

Like every other electronic, from time-to-time electric train sets may need a little troubleshooting. Of course, if you purchase a product from a reputable manufacturer like Lionel or Williams, you know that their phenomenal customer service representatives will be able to help you every step of the way.

Train Doesn’t Run at All

If your train stops running, don’t panic! It is highly unlikely that it is broken! There are a few different reasons why this could happen. If the headlight has simply failed or if there is no power going to the track, simply check the wires of the terminal track and fix the bad connection.

If your train has a green light like the Lionel Thunder Valley Quarry Mine Set, then this will help you determine a problem as well. If it is blinking, it often means that all the wheels are not properly on the track. If the light is completely out, check that the power strip is on. If it is, you may need to simply replace the transformer.

The last thing you want to check is that the reverse unit switch is indeed in the forward position. This may seem basic but many people overlook this little switch.

Train Won’t Reverse

Here’s another common concern you may stumble across simply by overlooking the proper switch. Although operations vary from one train manufacturer to another, the direction is typically controlled by the throttle lever located on the transformer.

Check to make sure that the switch is in the right position. Some units are designed to only go one way without manually controlling the direction by flipping the switch. Your owner’s manual will be able to tell you the proper method for making your locomotive go in reverse.

Sound Problems

Is your train supposed to make sounds? Take for example the Williams 00322 Keystone Express that has a bell and horn. If there is no sound at all coming from your train, check the volume control and make sure that it’s turned up. Someone could have turned it down when you were away, hoping you wouldn’t notice!

If you only have one sound or the other, check to see if your train has a switch underneath to control this. Some will have a switch that turns sounds on individually, rather than having them all on or all off.

Other Concerns

There are other things that could throw you for a loop like train cars not staying coupled, dead accessory terminals, lack of smoke or the air whistle not functioning. Rest-assured, most things you find not working with electric train sets can be remedied with a flip of the switch or a tweak to the wiring. These are products mad to last so don’t panic, your train is not broken; it just needs a little attention!
